The E90 generation BMW 3 Series (2006-2012 model years) marked the pinnacle of evolution and the end of an era for the BMW 3 Series. It was the last 3 Series to be offered with a normally aspirated inline 6-cylinder engine—a formula that had defined the 3 Series for generations. The normally aspirated 328i might not have had the raw power that its twin-turbo powered 335i sibling had, but the N52 is no slouch. The N52B30 is capable of 0-60 mph in the mid-6 second range, even with AWD. Yet, the N52 has none of the reliability, high-pressure fuel pump, or turbo issues that plagued early E9X 335i’s. The E90 is just right size, too. It is still small enough to be nimble and sporty, yet unlike its E46 predecessor, can haul four adults comfortably. Examples with the sport package got a thick-rimmed 3-spoke steering wheel, deeply bolstered seats with adjustable bolsters, shadowline trim, and 17-inch Style 159 sport wheels. In my opinion, the E90 was the last of true driver’s BMW 3 series—its F30 3 Series successor being too large, too luxurious, and too numb for my tastes.
This 2007 328Xi checks all of the boxes. First, it’s Crimson Red (Karmesinrot) over black Dakota Leather. Crimson is one of the best colors in the E90 palette, being only slightly lighter than the legendary Imola Red. Second, it has the Sport, Cold Weather, and Premium Packages, yet is free of navigation or iDrive, with honest and easy to use old-school buttons. Third, it’s got adaptive Xenon HID headlights that are not only self-leveling, but also turn with the steering wheel, which is one of coolest and most useful options BMW ever dreamed up. It also has the ambient Lights Package, which illuminates the exterior doors with the push of a key FOB button through door handle LEDs and doorsill bottom lights. Lastly, it’s been outfitted with non run-flat Goodyear Eagle Sport All Season tires and a full size spare in the trunk, meaning it corners well in all weather, but unlike the original run-flats rides smoothly and comfortably.
It is a Colorado car with a clean Carfax that presents, drives, and feels like a car with a fraction of its actual miles. I bought it from the second owner, who purchased it as a CPO car from Schomp BMW. He commuted from Boulder to Santa Fe, NM, so the vast majority of those are friendly highway miles. And because it’s got the rock-solid normally aspirated N52B30 engine, it is barely broken in. BMWs are like airplanes—age and mileage are relevant, but not nearly as much as proper care and maintenance. The original Service booklet shows regular dealer services from the first owner. The second owner continued to care for it with regular services shown on the Carfax at Gebhardt BMW and independent BMW specialists Autosport Werks. Once in my hands, I did a comprehensive service, bringing all routine and preventative E90 328Xi items up to date, a complete list is below in the mechanical section. This E90 must be seen and driven to be appreciated; it outshines and outdrives less meticulously cared for examples with much lower mileage. I’ve quizzed several visitors to the Glen Shelly hanger about many miles it might have and they’ve all guessed sub-100K.
Crimson Red is a sporting color that stands out from the majority of black, silver, or white E90s. The red is not UV faded and has clearly been stored indoors for the majority of its life. Overall the paint is in excellent condition, with no glaring chips, nicks, or peeling clear coat. When I got it, the front bumper did bear the rock-chip scars of highway miles, so I had it refinished in matching Crimson red. The leading edge of the hood and mirrors do have some minor rock chipping, but it takes close inspection to see it. The shadowline trim is a sport package exclusivity that looks amazing on red. All other trim is present and in good condition. I left the front license plate bracket off, but it can easily be put back on. I also have a tow hook front license plate holder I will include in the sale if desired. When I did the front bumper cover I pulled the headlights and fog light covers and had the lenses professionally refinished. They are crystal-clear and look amazing. The adaptive self-leveling Xenon headlights work, as do the angel eyes. All other light lenses are clear and crack-free. In preparation for sale, I replaced the windshield; it is crack and pit-free as a result. The side and rear window glass is tinted and in excellent shape. The only noticeable exterior imperfection is a white line and some broken clips on the passenger side lower side skirt (pics are on our website if you are reading this elsewhere). The Style 159 sport wheels are straight and true with only slight curb rash on the outer lip. They are wrapped in Goodyear Eagle Sport All Season rubber with 80% tread remaining. A full-size matching spare is included in the trunk.
The Black Dakota leather is in exceptional condition. It looks and feels very much like the day it left the dealership, and it still has that lovely BMW leather smell. Tinted windows have protected it from UV hardening or fade—a must for a Colorado car. When viewed from inside the front passenger window tint has slightly different color temperature, but it is only noticeable from inside. The Burr Walnut Fine Wood trim is all present and presentable, except for one crack above the glovebox. This could be cheaply replaced with a new trim piece. There are no odors and it has never been smoked in. The carpets are clean, with no stains or tears. BMW carpeted floor mats are included with the sale and are in good shape. The 3-spoke sport steering wheel makes no mistake that this is a driver’s car. The steering wheel leather is in great shape and all function buttons work. The seat leather has no tears, failed stitching, or bolster wear. All power seat functions work, including the adjustable side bolsters. In preparation for sale, I had Autosport Werks inspect all seat switches and wiring, they repaired an area of chaffed wiring found under the driver’s seat. The instrument cluster, on-board computer display, and cruise control speed pointer all work and have no failed displays or pixels. The stereo and HVAC displays are likewise excellent; the only exception being the very top horizontal border-line has a few intermittent pixels. It doesn’t affect the information displayed at all. All accessories and options function correctly. There are no warning lights and no system check messages. The BMW Professional stereo and HiFi speakers sound fantastic; there is an aux plug in the center console. The heat blows warm and the air conditioning blows cold. The heater blower is quiet and the final stage resistor functions correctly at all fan speeds. All power door locks and windows work exactly as they should. The sunroof opens, closes, and tilts up on command. The shade is on the tracks and slides smoothly. Both retractable cup holders work and are not cracked (a common issue). E90 dashboard cup holders were not BMW’s finest, but there is a very useable one underneath the center console armrest. The trunk carpet has some discoloration from where the spare tire has sat. The full-size spare does take up some trunk space, but the trade off from the factory run flats is worth it. All owners manuals are present. There is only one FOB, but an extra one can be sourced from BMW.
When you buy a used BMW, you buy the previous owner’s stewardship. This E90 has always benefited from excellent stewardship from both of its previous owners. Only the best examples are selected as certified pre-owned (CPO) cars, which is how the previous owner bought it from Schomp BMW. In preparation for sale I had Autosport Werks give it a comprehensive service to bring all maintenance up to date. This included:
Previous recent services show regular oil changes along with:
The result is a 328Xi that drives and feels very much like it did when it left the dealer. I’ve been driving it regularly and am impressed at how tight everything is. The N52 engine fires on command, idles smoothly, and pulls strongly to redline. It doesn’t spot or leak. The clutch and shifter are smooth and precise. The shifter is super tight, with none of the slop, or “spoon in a bowl of spaghetti,” feeling that most high-mileage BMW shifters feel like. The AWD system works and the transfer case and differentials are quiet. The suspension is firm, yet compliant. There are no clunks, rattles, or other abnormal drivetrain vibrations or noises. The brakes are firm. Like any BMW, it will need continued care and routine maintenance, but if done so this example will last a very long time.
