The (E86) Z4 M Coupe was BMW’s successor to the polarizing “clown shoe” Z3 M Coupe. Unlike the Z3 M Coupe, which was a parts bin car, the Z4 M Coupe was designed from the onset with M and Coupe variants in mind. As a result, the Z4 M Coupe has none of the shortcomings of its Z3 predecessor. The fastback roof adds an air of elegance to the brutish, flame-surfaced lines of the Z4 roadster, and it also adds rigidity. Underneath the sheet metal is the last application of one of BMW’s greatest engines, the S54B32 3.2-liter inline six-cylinder producing 330 horsepower. That power is routed through a six-speed manual gearbox and delivered to the rear wheels through an advanced multi-link rear suspension. When it’s time to stop, aluminum hub, cross-drilled floating brakes developed for the E46 M3 CSL quickly bring the Z4 M Coupe’s 3230 pounds to rest. The Z4M is one of the most evolved examples of that old-school M car recipe in a two-seat coupe that is unapologetically focused on the driving experience. Best of all, you can brag to your muscle car friends about how it was made right here in the USA at BMW’s Spartanburg, South Carolina plant.
This 2007 Z4 M Coupe, finished in Alpine White over Black Napa, strikes the perfect balance between a desirable color combination, having only 47,500 miles, being in excellent condition, and having proper mechanical sorting. Factory options include the desirable brushed aluminum trim, no Navigation, M leather seats, M steering wheel, BMW Business CD stereo with HiFi Professional Sound, Xenon headlights, and a 6-speed manual gearbox—the only option available for the Z4 M Coupe! The only aftermarket addition is a Super Spring cat-back exhaust, which adds slight aggression to the exhaust note without being obtrusive. It has a build date of May 4, 2007, right here in good ‘ole Spartanburg, South Carolina. The Carfax shows an in-service date of June 6, 2007, to the first owner in Georgia. The Carfax reports frequent services under that owner and the second owner, who also resided in Georgia. In 2015 it came to Colorado under brief stints with two more owners until we originally purchased it and sold it to the current owner in 2017. We are selling it (only a few thousand miles later) on consignment for that owner, a local BMW collector. In preparation for sale, we completed a fresh oil change, engine air filter, cabin air filters, battery, ambient air temperature sensor, serpentine belt, and a brake fluid flush. Cosmetically, we addressed a few dents with paint-less dent repair, did some very light swirl correction, replaced the M emblems, replaced the front tow hook cover (which was removed for a license plate holder), replaced the driver’s side cup holder, and replaced some aged-out undertray panels. Prior to our previous sale in 2017 at 46,500 miles, we completed an Inspection II, including the S54 valve adjustment. We also replace a faulty ABS unit. The Carfax reports minor damage to the rear bumper cover in 2008, which was repainted. As it sits, this is a fantastic example of a Z4 M Coupe ready to be enjoyed by its new owner.
Alpine White is a fantastic color for the Z4 M Coupe, and the paint on this example is in excellent condition, showing no glaring imperfections. The paint gauges between 4 and 6 mils, with the rear bumper cover being repainted in 2008. Close scrutiny does reveal imperfections, the worst being spidering in the driver side of the rear bumper cover, light scuffing on the lower front bumper cover, and other small paint chips and scratches. There is no rust. All VIN and warning stickers are accounted for and legible. No panel gap inconsistencies could be found. All trim is present and in pristine condition. All glass is crack-free, and there are no signs of excessive pitting. The headlights, taillights, and indicators are all functional and undamaged. The Style 224 are presentable, but they do have minor rash on the lips and small areas of paint lifting. They are wrapped in Michelin Pilot Sport A/S 3+ tires with 2017 DOT dates and just a few thousand miles on the tread.
The Black Napa leather interior is in excellent condition; black leather with brushed aluminum trim complements Alpine White wonderfully. There are no odors, and it has never been smoked. The black M floor mats are present and have protected the black carpet underneath. The headliner is in excellent condition. The door cars are also very nice except for some wrinkling to the leather on the driver-side. The thick-rimmed leather M steering wheel is in good shape with imperfections consisting of light scratches to the black plastic and light wear at the top. The dashboard is crack and fade-free. Both cup holders function correctly; we replaced the driver’s side one. The instrument cluster has no blown-out pixels and shows no warning lights. The door and window switches are in good and working order. The air conditioning blows cold, and the heat blows warm. The BMW Business/HiFi Professional stereo system functions as it should, there is no damage to the display, and it sounds great. The center console is in good condition, with no notable damage, and the leather is not faded or worn. The seats are in excellent condition, sans light bolster wear on the driver’s seat. The trunk and rear hatch are in great condition, with nothing damaged or worn. The owners’ manual is not present, but two keys are included.
In 2017, when we last sold it, we gave it a fresh Inspection II, including the S54 valve adjustment. In preparation for sale, we completed an oil change, air filter, cabin air filter, ambient air temperature sensor, serpentine belt, and a brake fluid flush. The S54 engine starts on command, idles smoothly, and pulls very strongly to redline (once the oil is warmed up, of course). It could just be the Super Sprint exhaust, but it is remarkably fast. There are no VANOS rattle, leaks, or seeps. The S54 engines used in Z4 M Coupes did not suffer the rod bearing issue that early S54 units did. The shifting is crisp, and the clutch take-up is correct. There is no driveline whine or vibrations. The suspension is taut and compliant. The stock M3 CSL brakes are fantastic and will separate retinas under hard braking. The tires have 2017 dates, but only a few thousand miles on the tread. We pay for and ensure it passes emissions in the State of Colorado. This is a turn-key M Coupe that is ready to be enjoyed by its new owner.
