The E90 generation M3 (2008-2013 model years, the 0 designates the 4-door) marks the end of an era for the BMW M3. It was the last M3 that followed the high revving, high compression, naturally aspirated, individual throttle body recipe that started with the iconic original E30 M3. If you are an M car fanatic of the old school, this is a big deal in the turbo-charged world of the present. The E90 M3 is the most highly evolved and potent example of that old-school recipe. Put another way, the E90 M3 is a fire breathing monster that shrieks to a redline well north of 8,000 rpm while inhaling through no less than eight snarling throttle bodies and wailing through an exhaust unimpeded by turbochargers. It is the M3 with the volume turned up to eleven. And, because it’s an M3, it still offers wonderful daily drivability, comfort, luxury, and practicality. Car and Driver, Motor Trend, and Edmunds called the E90 M3 the finest, single best, and most complete car on the market. Even the sanctimonious Jeremy Clarkson said it was the best car and there is no point in thinking otherwise.
This Melbourne Red over Anthracite cloth 2008 E90 M3 Sedan belonged to a family member of the Glen Shelly team and it embodies everything we love about these cars. With four doors, six-speed manual, slicktop, iDrive-delete M3 sedan with cloth seats it is an absolute purist driver’s spec car. Other factory options are adaptive xenon headlights, the lights package, heated seats, and brushed aluminum trim. Three sets of floor mats are included: factory M3 carpet mats, rubber all-weather mats, and diamond stitched custom mats. Modifications are back Competition Package ZCP wheels and a Super Sprint/resonator deleted exhaust that underlines the fact that this M3 is something special. We would describe it as a refined yet commanding exhaust sound that celebrates the 4.0L V8 in all of its 8,000 RPM glory.
This M3 was originally delivered by Erhard BMW in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan, where the first owner put a mere 2,800 miles on the car in two years. From there, the car moved to New York, North Carolina, and Texas, under the ownership of an active-duty member of the Air Force. The car was maintained by a reputable BMW shop in San Antonio, Texas before it joined the extended Glen Shelly family and enjoyed a pampered life in sunny Florida.
This M3 is an excellent example of the “M3/4/6” which will go down in history much like the beloved E36 M3/4/5 manual sedans, especially with the slick top (no sunroof) and cloth/leather seats. The car presents exceptionally well, with all paint measuring to factory numbers with the exception of a bumper cover replacement which was disclosed by a previous seller and confirmed by CarFax. We trailered the vehicle to Colorado and performed maintenance including a wheel speed sensor, brakes on all four corners, and an oil change in preparation for the sale. The E90 M3 market has diverged, and this E90 M3 is an outlier due to its unique build options and exceptional condition. We would like to find a home for it where it will be well cared for, appreciated and enjoyed.
Melbourne Red is a unique color that blends the best of classic and modern BMW paint, splitting color temperature the difference between the E36 M3’s Hellrot and the E46 M3’s Imola reds. The paint all measures to factory depths on the paint gauge with a reported front bumper cover replacement that cannot be detected from visual inspection. There are minor rock chips on the front bumper, with only one noteworthy ding beneath the driver’s side headlight. Fresh OEM kidney grills brighten up the front of the car. The rear bumper is in very good condition with one circular impression above the driver’s side exhaust and only the slightest hints of road wear throughout. All trim is accounted for, we replaced the kidney grilles and side gills due to UV fade. The windshield is in good shape with no cracks and minor evidence of pitting. The headlights, taillights, turn signals, and corner markers are all clear and crack-free. The headlights do have minor pitting in the lenses. The ZCP wheels present well with only one visible curb or rock dent on the front passenger side wheel. The Michelin Pilot SuperSport tires present well with roughly 50% tread life remaining.
The interior is in great condition. The cloth centers of the seats of no stains or rips, and there is only light bolster wear on the driver’s seat. There are no odors and it has never been smoked in. The leather and cloth seats present very well, with minor wear on the driver’s side bolster. The cloth seat centers wear better than their leather counterparts, and as a result the interior of this car presents exceptionally well with just the right amount of wear to fit a driver’s car like this one. The carpet and floor mats are in excellent condition, reflecting the use of the OEM rubber and aftermarket patterned vinyl mats. The steering wheel leather is soft and supple with only light wear. The carbon fiber pattern leather trim looks fantastic. The shifter boot is supple and the shift knob shows just a bit of that classic BMW patina. The door cards are clean, with the exception of some light scuffing and one nick near the rear edge of the door panel. The passenger front door pull has some marking on it, we’ve ordered a replacement that should arrive in several weeks. There are minor scuffs on the rear of the center console, though the back seat appears minorly used. All other interior functions work correctly, windows, door locks, heat, and air conditioning. There is no iDrive screen to speak of and the are no check lights, warning lights, or check control alerts. The stereo sounds good and functions well. Two key FOBs are included, along with the owners’ manual leather booklet.
The records show maintenance at BMW dealerships and reputable independent shops in accordance with BMW’s suggested service intervals. Oil changes have always been done either at or more often than BMW’s recommended maintenance schedule. If desired, we can pull an oil analysis for rod bearing health, but historically we don’t recommend preventative replacement until the 60K mile mark. The S65 fires on command, idles smoothly, and pulls strongly to redline. The SuperSprint exhaust sounds exceptionally good, highlighting the fact that this driver’s spec E90 M3 is the last of the all-motor M cars. It does not throw any codes, and no warning lights are present. The transmission shifts smoothly and clutch take-up is correct. The suspension is healthy and there are no driveline vibrations or noise. The brakes are strong and recently received a full service at Glen Shelly. The tires have approximately 50% life left. As it sits, it is a turn-key M3 ready to be enjoyed by its new owner.
