The BMW E70 generation X5 was the second generation of the Sports Activity Vehicle that started the modern BMW crossover movement. Launched in 1999, as the E53, the X5 grew to become BMW’s most popular crossover. It offered a taller ride height and more utility than its sedan counterpart. Yet, unlike other crossovers, it retains BMW’s fantastic driving dynamics and despite its height and weight, it can still go around corners properly. And, like its 5 Series sibling, BMW festooned it with a host of performance and luxury options and amenities. The E70 generation X5 took this a leap further with modernities like an available panoramic sunroof and third row seating. The most reliable E70 X5 was the 3.0i; having fewer maintenance requirements than the turbo and V8 models did. This was thanks to one of BMW’s last naturally aspirated inline 6-cylinder engines, the 270-horsepower N52B30. The N52-powered X5 3.0i offered the best of both worlds, modern amenities with old-school BMW reliability.
This 2009 X5 3.0i is one such example; I am selling it on consignment for the second owner. Finished in Monaco Blue Metallic over Grey Nevada Leather it is very well optioned with desirable items including the panoramic sunroof, third row seating, adaptive xenon headlights, heated front and rear seats, and a heated steering wheel (a full option list is outlined in the VIN decode below). It was originally delivered to West Chester BMW in July of 2009 and sold to the first owner shortly thereafter. The Carfax reports regular BMW Dealer services under that owner. Then in 2012 it came to Colorado through Gebhardt BMW and was sold to the second owner as a Certified Pre-Owned (CPO) vehicle—meaning it meet BMW’s strict CPO criteria. It has remained with that owner ever since always being serviced at Gebhardt BMW or independent BMW specialists Auto Sport Werks. Proper ownership and maintenance are the most crucial component with used any BMW, and this X5 has benefitted from that in spades. A thick records binder is included with the sale that shows extensive routine and preventative maintenance of common X5 items. The Carfax shows a minor accident in 2011; if it were worse than minor it would not have met CPO criteria. In 2016 the current owner hit the garage door with the rear hatch, resulting in the rear hatch and lift motor being replaced. Well-maintained X5s such as this one are difficult to come by and most racked up hard commuter miles or were battered by the likes of harsh weather, kids, and dogs. It comes with a clean Colorado title, three key FOBs, and we pay for and ensure it passes emissions.
Monaco Blue Metallic is an excellent color, a rich dark blue metallic that looks nearly black in the shade, but really pops in the sunlight. The paint on this example is in very good condition. Other than minor scratches and dings, the only notable imperfections are light UV fade on the black plastic trim bits and running boards, along with some fading of the headlights. All trim is present and in great condition. The adaptive xenon headlights are bright and the halo rings have no failed filaments. The fog lights, marker lights, and taillights have clean and clear lenses and operate correctly. The windshield has minor pitting with 2 small chips in the lower left driver’s field of vision. The factory VIN sticker and all decals are in place. The Style 210 wheels have no curb rash, only some minor scratches. They are wrapped in Nitto Crosstek tires with 40% tread remaining.
The Grey Nevada leather interior is overall in excellent condition. Most X5s have hauled kids, dogs, etc. and the interiors took a beating as a result. This interior shows no evidence of that. There are no odors and it has never been smoked in. The carpets are clean and in good condition, other than light staining by the dead pedal in the driver’s foot well. BMW carpet and all-weather floor mats are included. The dashboard leather is in good shape. The wood trim is also in good shape, but it does have a few faint cracks. The seat leather has no tears, failed stitching, or bolster wear. All power seat functions and seat heaters work. The instrument cluster has no failed pixels; there are no warning lights and no system check messages. The stereo system sounds fantastic, there are no blown out speakers. The heat blows warm and the air conditioning blows cold. The heater blower is quiet at all speeds. All power door locks, windows, and rear hatch work as they should. The sunroof operates on command and the shade is on the tracks. The rear carpet has no wear or stains. The rear side window sunshades extend and retract correctly and the latching clips are intact. The lift gate has firm shocks and the electric latch functions correctly. The cargo cover is present. All owners’ manuals are present, along with three keys.
When you buy a used BMW, you buy the previous owner’s stewardship, and this example has clearly benefitted from such. The Carfax and records show proper BMW maintenance in the form of regular oil changes, inspections, preventative and corrective maintenance. As it sits, no common X5 issues are present. The electric water pump, valve cover gaskets and brakes have all been replaced within the last year. The N52 engine fires up on command, idles smoothly, and pulls strongly to redline. There is no VANOS rattle. The transmission shifts smoothly. The self-leveling suspension is compliant and does not sag even after sitting for a long time. There are no clunks, rattles, or other abnormal drivetrain noises. The brakes are firm and it passes emissions with no problems, which we pay for. Like any X5, it will certainly need continued care and maintenance, but it is a turn-key car.
