The BMW 1-Series M Coupe (1M Coupe) was one of those weird parts-bin M models that some M GmbH engineer probably waited until his boss had put back a few steins before pitching the idea to build it. Fortunately, for the motoring world, his boss actually said yes! And, unlike those other parts-bin M cars (ahem, clown-shoe M Coupe), the 1M Coupe was widely successful right out of the gate—because it was (and still is) utterly fantastic. Perhaps it was that the 1M’s contemporary M cars had model-crept into larger size ranges and enthusiasts wanted something smaller and nimbler. It could also be that it was a one-year-only, special production run limited to just 983 examples for the U.S. market. Either way, the automotive world loved the 1M Coupe. Despite not having a true M powerplant under the hood, it received unanimous praise for aggressive body lines, taut steering, brakes, and suspension, and having just the right amount of power. Time has been even kinder to the 1M as values have appreciated significantly and steadily beyond its original retail price and its current replacement, the BMW M2.
This 2011 BMW 1M Coupe is 1 of only 326 Alpine White over Black Boston leather examples produced for the U.S. Market. It is in collector-grade pristine condition with only 14,700 miles, and only two owners. Options consist of the Convenience and Premium Packages outlined above, along with Adaptive xenon headlights, Voice Command, and headlight washers. It was originally delivered by Braman Motors Inc., in Miami, Florida, on July 30, 2011. The extensive documentation includes two window stickers, all original sales paperwork, press releases and magazine reviews, and thorough maintenance records. The original owner was clearly a 1M Coupe enthusiast. The records show dealer services at Braman starting with the break-in service at 824 miles, followed by regular inspections, oil services, brake fluid flushes, air filters, battery monitoring, and factory recalls. After the warranty period, service was shifted to independent specialists European Performance and Repair in Vero Beach, Florida, in 2018 at 9,623 miles. The work there continued with regular oil changes and brake fluid flushes, along with a differential fluid flush, air filters, and replacing the boost control valve that turned out to be a hairline crack in the charge pipe. Fresh tires and an alignment were also completed in 2018.
In 2020, a Glen Shelly regular and fellow BMW CCA member brought it to Colorado at approximately 12,000 miles, where it was the pride of his collection. A pre-purchase inspection was done by European Performance and Repair, and a post-sale service was done by local specialists Autosport Werks and Gebhardt BMW. The latter included spark plugs, a cooling system flush, a power steering fluid flush, an oil service, and a four-wheel alignment. Additionally, immediately upon arrival, extensive Xpel PPF was installed to preserve the condition of the car. He drove it sparingly over the next three years, accumulating only 2,700 miles. In August of 2021, while driving down Lefthand Canyon, he had a bizarre wildlife encounter at very slow speed while passing a cyclist. The cyclist flushed out a spooked deer, which contacted the right rear quarter panel with its body as it ran behind them. Pictures of the damage are included in the records, along with paint-less dent repair by Michael Hand of Dents by Hand and repainting of the right rear quarter panel by local specialists SVE Autobody due to slight cracking in the paint. Pictures and documentation of all stages of the repairs are included in the records. There was no structural damage, and the paint match is factory-perfect. The Carfax documents the damage, and all of the repairs are substantiated in the records. Incidentally, the deer also carried on its day without injury. This 1M Coupe is truly in incredible condition; we are selling on consignment for the current owner and are proud to have such a pristine example here at the hangar. We look forward to finding the owner who will write the next chapter of its story!
The Alpine White paint is pristine and accentuates the cut lines, flares, and aggressiveness of the 1M perfectly. Extreme scrutiny reveals only a tiny pit on the corner of the driver’s door and slight imperfections elsewhere. All panels are original, and the paint gauges between 5 and 10 mils, excluding the refinished area on the passenger-side quarter panel. The front bumper cover only has tiny pits and scuffs underneath; the rear has a tiny pit near the trunk latch. There is no rust, and all VIN and warning stickers are in place and undamaged. The trim work is perfect, as is all glass. The head and taillights are crystal clear and fully functional. The Y-Spoke style 395M 19-inch staggered wheels are straight and true with no curb rash. The Michelin Pilot Super Sport tires measure 245/35 in front and 265/35 in rear with 2017 and 2018 DOT dates, respectively. Treadwear is even at 9/32nds all around.
The interior black leather and Alcantara trim are as impressively well-maintained as the exterior. There is no odor other than that wonderful leather smell; it has never been smoked in. The carpet has no stains or tears. The seats have no notable wear, and all seat functions work. The M steering wheel leather is soft and supple with no failed M stitching or wear. All steering wheel functions work. There are no failed LCD pixels in the instrument cluster or iDrive screen. There are no service requirement warnings, the oil level is good, and there are no check control messages. The HiFi sound system is fantastic. The heat blows warm, and the air conditioning blows cold with no noise. The center console has minor wear, and the iDrive controller functions correctly. All power options function correctly. The door cards are pristine, and the window regulators are quiet. The anthracite headliner is excellent. The trunk carpet has no stains. Other than minor center console wear, the only interior flaw is a tiny scuff to the interior paint near the trunk release button.
All maintenance is up to date, and no common 1M Coupe issues are present, as outlined in the summary paragraph. The N54 fires on command, idles smoothly, and pulls strongly to redline. It does not leak, drip, or spot. There is no wastegate rattle, the turbos are healthy, and there is no history of limp mode or high-pressure fuel pump issues. The charge pipe was replaced due to a hairline crack, and the turbo controller was replaced in troubleshooting that problem. The transmission, shifter assembly, and clutch are all indicative of a gently driven low mileage 1M Coupe. The tight ratio steering is fantastic. The suspension is firm and compliant. There is no driveline or wheel bearing vibration or whine. There are no exhaust leaks; we pay for and ensure it passes emissions in Colorado. It does not appear to have ever been abused or tracked. We would like to find a new owner for this one who will enjoy and care for it for years to come.
