The E90 generation BMW 3 Series (2006-2012 model years) marked the pinnacle of evolution and the end of an era for the BMW 3 Series. It was the last 3 Series to be offered with a normally aspirated inline 6-cylinder engine—a formula that had defined the 3 Series for generations. The normally aspirated 328i might not have had the raw power that its twin-turbo powered 335i sibling had, but the N52 (or N51, depending on emissions jurisdiction) is no slouch. The N52B30 is capable of 0-60 mph in the mid-6 second range, even with AWD. The N52 has none of the reliability, high-pressure fuel pump, or turbo issues that have plagued 335i’s. The E90 is the “just right” size, too. It is still small enough to be nimble and sporty, yet unlike its E46 predecessor, can haul four adults comfortably. The E90 was the last of the true driver’s BMW 3 series—its F30 3 Series successor being too large, too luxurious, and too numb.
This 2007 BMW 328Xi finished in Space Gray over Black Dakota leather with just less than 112,000 miles on the odometer is a great driver-quality example of an E90. It is optioned with all-wheel drive, a 6-speed manual transmission, the Cold Weather Package (including heated seats), the lights package, and no iDrive. It was originally delivered in New Jersey in October of 2010, where it remained before moving to North Carolina in 2012. In 2016 it found its way to Kansas City, Missouri where it stayed until the previous owner brought it to Colorado in 2018. The Carfax shows frequent and regular services throughout its life, with lots of recent maintenance by BMW specialists Paddock Imports and The Import Mechanics under the previous owner. We purchased it from him and set about another round of maintenance to bring it up to our standards. The work we did included replacing the valve cover and valve cover gasket, oil filter housing (oil stand) gasket, oil pan gasket with a fresh oil change, engine air filter, and the cabin air filter. The Carfax is clean, and it comes with the owner’s manual and two sets of keys.
Spacegrau (Space Gray) is a common color for E90 sedans, and for good reason; the metallic hue is light enough to be forgiving of imperfections, while still dark enough to appear clean the majority of the time, perfect for a daily driver. The finish is glossy and presents well, with no significant chips, fading, or deep scratches. The two notable exterior imperfections are some deformation of the rear bumper (likely from bumping into something) and some cracking body filler just behind the passenger rear door from a past repair. The Carfax is clean, so this was likely a minor incident. The trim is clean and not significantly UV faded. All other trim is present and in good condition. The headlights are clear and crack-free; they have moderate pitting. The side markers are faded, and the taillights are clear and crack free. The windshield is clear with no chips, only light pitting. The side and rear window glass is in excellent shape. The wheels are straight, but they all have some curb rash. The tires have decent tread left but have some inner shoulder wear.
The Black Dakota leather is in great condition. There is faint smoke odor, but it is tolerable even on hot days. The front seats are excellent, with only minor outer bolster wear on the driver’s seat. The wood trim is clean. The carpets are clean, with no stains or tears. BMW carpeted floor mats are included with the sale and are in good shape. The steering wheel leather is in great shape and all function buttons work. All power seat functions work. All lights function on the cluster and no warning lights are illuminated. The stereo and HVAC displays are likewise good, although some of the pixels in the stereo display are weak. It does not affect the display of information. The BMW Professional stereo sounds great; there is an aux plug in the center console. The heat blows warm and the air conditioning blows cold. The blower is quiet and the final stage resistor functions correctly at all fan speeds. All power door locks and windows work exactly as they should. The sunroof opens, closes, and tilts up on command. The shade is on the tracks and slides smoothly. The center retractable cupholder works, but the right side is broken; it stays in place in the dash, but beware if you try to open it! There are two key FOBs included in the sale.
As it sits, this is a turn-key E90 328Xi. The Carfax shows a history of regular maintenance, with lots of recent services under the previous owner. The majority of the work we accomplished consisted of oil leaks typical of E90s by 100K miles. It will certainly need continued maintenance, but we have reset the clock on many expensive items. The N51 engine starts on command, idles smoothly, and pulls strongly to redline. The clutch take-up is correct and does not slip. The shifter is tight, and the gearbox shifts smoothly. There are no driveline or wheel bearing vibrations. The suspension is compliant, with the Carfax showing some components being recently replaced. The brakes are firm. We are responsible for emissions in the State of Colorado.
