The E9X generation 3 Series marks the end of an era for the BMW 3 Series. It was the last 3 Series that could be had with a naturally-aspirated six-cylinder engine, found only in the N52-powered 328i variants. In comparison, this entry-level power plant may have been overshadowed by its twin-turbo siblings when new, time has been kind to the N52-powered E9Xs. They have not succumbed to the reliability issues of the twin-turbo N54 and N55 E9Xs. In fact, the N52 was the greatest evolution of BMW’s longstanding tradition of naturally-aspirated inline sixes, one that also avoided the oil consumption and cooling system maladies of its M54 predecessor. The E9X was available in coupe, sedan, and wagon form with rear and all-wheel drive variants. As time has marched on, the E90X’s styling has aged well, and the driving experience strikes the perfect balance of analog and modern experience.
This 2011 Black Sapphire Metallic over Black leather 328i xDrive Touring with only 77,800 miles is a fantastic, driver-quality example ready to fulfill the next owner’s all-wheel-drive sport wagon mission. This was the final evolution of the E91 328Xi, as it was the last year of non-M E9X production. Notable options include the premium and cold weather packages (consisting of power memory seats with lumbar support, auto-dimming rearview mirrors, and heated seats), a heated steering wheel, comfort access, parking distance control, adaptive xenon headlights, the lights package, and CIC iDrive. The Carfax history picks up at 10K miles in late 2011 in San Francisco, California. It remained in California under several subsequent owners until 2018 and 30K miles when it came to Colorado. It landed with the current owner in 2021 at 40K miles, a Glen Shelly regular, who we are selling on consignment for. Under their tenure, we or Gebhardt BMW have serviced it. The Carfax shows two incidents of minor damage to the front bumper cover before coming to Colorado. Last year, we replaced the engine due to flawed VANOS bolts with an 80K-mile N52B28. In the process, we resealed the engine and replaced many accessories; the work totaled over five figures. BMW subsequently issued a recall for the faulty VANOS units, and replaced the new engine VANOS under recall, along with many other associated parts. Gebhardt BMW completed this; receipts for everything under the current owner’s tenure are included in the records binder. The sale includes two sets of wheels and tires: seventeen-inch BBS CF wheels with Hankook Ventus tires and original Style 285 wheels with Bridgestone Blizzak snow tires. The cosmetic condition is presentable enough to be proud of, but imperfect enough to use and enjoy. We want to find another wagon fanatic who will use it for years to come and appreciate it as the final chapter of BMW’s naturally-aspirated 3 Series legacy.
The Sapphire black metallic paint is in good condition and presents nicely. Flaws consist of moderate swirling, paint chips, and some deeper scuffs and scratches, all consistent with the driver-quality mission of this car. The front bumper cover has scuffing on the lower leading edges, and a few areas of paint cracking. The paint gauges between 4 and 6 mils, with one deeper area on the left rear quarter panel. The front bumper cover and possibly the hood, left door, and rear quarter panel have been repainted. The VIN sticker is in place, as are all warning stickers, and there is no rust (lift shots are available on our website if you are reading this elsewhere). All trim is present and in good condition, with slight UV fade. The windshield is crack-free and has only minor pitting; the side and rear window glass are tinted and in great shape. The headlight lenses are slightly opaque; the side, marker, and taillights are also in excellent condition, except for a cracked passenger taillight lens. The BBS CF wheels have light to moderate curb rash; the Hankook tires have 2019 DOT dates with 7/32s tread remaining. The Style 285 wheels are in better condition, with minor curb rash; they are wrapped in Bridgestone Blizzak Snow tires.
The black leather interior is in good shape, and the brushed aluminum trim offsets the leather nicely. There are no odors, and it has never been smoked in. The carpet is free of tears and stains and is protected by BMW floor mats in fair condition. The headliner doesn’t sag, and the pillar trims are free of wrinkles. The door sill on the driver’s side has very light scuffing, and the driver’s door rubber seal is torn from entry. The seats are in very good condition, with only light bolster wear on the outer bolsters. The driver’s recline button is broken, but still functions. The rear seats are consistent and are the desirable fold-down type. The steering wheel, dashboard, instrument cluster, steering column switches, and center console buttons are in good condition with minor imperfections. The gearshift leather trim is warped. There are no failed pixels in the instrument cluster. The BMW stereo sounds fantastic. The A/C blows cold and the heat blows warm. The cup holders also work. The owner’s manual leather booklet is included.
All maintenance is up to date, and no common issues are present. The engine fires on command, idles smoothly, and pulls strongly to redline. It does not leak, drip, or spot. The VANOS is quiet. The transmission shifts correctly, and there are no codes. The suspension is firm and compliant. The brakes have lots of pad life and rotor run-out remaining. There is no driveline or wheel bearing vibration or whine. We ensure it passes and pay for emissions in the State of Colorado. As it sits, this is a turn-key 328i xDrive Sport Wagon ready to be driven and enjoyed by its new owner.
