The E90 generation M3 (2008-2013 model years, the 0 designates the 4-door) marks the end of an era for the BMW M3. It was the last M3 that followed the high revving, high compression, naturally aspirated, individual throttle body recipe that started with the iconic original E30 M3. If you are an M car fanatic of the old school, this is a big deal in the turbo-charged world of the present. The E90 M3 is the most highly evolved and potent example of that old-school recipe. The E90 M3 is a fire-breathing monster that shrieks to a redline well north of 8,000 rpm while inhaling through no less than eight snarling throttle bodies and wailing through an exhaust unimpeded by turbochargers. It is the M3 with the volume turned up to eleven. And, because it’s an M3, it still offers wonderful daily drivability, comfort, luxury, and practicality. Car and Driver, Motor Trend, and Edmunds called the E90 M3 the finest, single best, and most complete car on the market. Even the sanctimonious Jeremy Clarkson said it was the best car, and there is no point in thinking otherwise.
Sedan lovers rejoice; this 2011 M3 Competition is the quintessential performance daily driver! Check out these specs: Interlagos Blue Metallic over Bambo Extended Leather with Black Carbon Leather Trim. M DCT Dual-Clutch transmission with M Drivelogic, Competition Package, Convenience Package including Comfort Access, Cold Weather Package, Adjustable Side Bolsters, Adaptive Xenon Headlights, Lights Package, Rear Sunshades, and the list goes on and on. Although I’ve always been an E46 SMG fan, the E90 M3 generation M DCT is the first automated manual gearbox where you can have your cake and eat it too. It’s perfectly civilized for the daily grind of stop-and-go traffic, but rips when you get on it. Configure it with the M Drive button, and a simple press of the steering wheel button reverts it to full manual mode, awakening the beast to take full advantage of the Competition Package. Rip your on-ramp, settle into traffic, and another press of the M Drive button puts the beast to rest until the next opportunity for hooliganism.
This M3 has an original build date of May 5, 2010, making it an early (pre-2011.5) Competition Package car, which was first offered for the 2011 model year. It was delivered in Maryland, but moved to Sunnyvale, California under the original owner in September of 2012, where it resided with the subsequent owner for the next six years. It moved to New Jersey in 2018 at 74,000 miles and Pennsylvania last year at 81,000 miles before we brought it to Colorado earlier this year. The Carfax documents regular maintenance throughout its life. Upon arrival, we did a round of preventative maintenance, including the rod bearings, engine mounts, oil pan gasket, a DCT transmission service, valve cover gaskets, timing cover gaskets, coil pack spark plug tubes, spark plugs, and subsequently a post rod bearing break-in oil service. We also replaced the steering wheel trim, the windshield, and mounted one-size-up Continental ExtremeContact DWS high-performance all-season tires (pictures were taken before doing any of these).
The Carfax is clean, but there is evidence of paintwork in the driver-side quarter panel (this may have been done before the original delivery). All of the paint gauges at 4-7 mils except the driver-side quarter panel, which gauges at over 10 mils in places. The front bumper cover was repainted due to rock chipping, and the paint and fitment are presentable, but not perfect. It photographs extremely well, but in person, these flaws are noticeable. This suits the driver-quality nature of the car, and we have fallen in love with it. It is our favorite car in the entire inventory, so the mileage will go up. We paid a healthy premium for this M3 and have subsequently made it better, so we are bullish on the listing price. But for the money, there are few better cars than a highly optioned Interlagos Blue M3 Competition Sedan. We are happy to keep enjoying it until it pulls at the right person’s heartstrings!
The Interlagos Blue paint presents very well and is a defining feature of the M3. Close scrutiny does reveal flaws, minor scratches, and some chipping, the worst being the front bumper, hood, and other leading edges. The fitment of the front bumper cover isn’t perfect, but it is acceptable for the driver-quality mission. There is no rust. The VIN and warning stickers are present. All trim is in-place and presentable, but there are typical age-related flaws. The passenger side hood vent isn’t seated perfectly, and the upper edges of the Shadowline window trim have some touchup areas. We replaced the windshield; it is crack and pitting-free, and the side and rear windows are tinted and in good shape. The headlights are presentable, with light scuffing and slight yellowing. All other light lenses are crack-free. The wheels are free of curb rash, but show light scratches and chips. We mounted fresh Continental ExtremeContact DWS tires, which were mounted after the pictures were taken.
The Bamboo extended leather interior of this vehicle is in good condition, and is another defining element of the M3. There are no odors and it has not been smoked in. The carpet is in good shape and protected by the factory floor mats. The floor mats show some wear, but have done their job. The headliner and dashboard are in excellent condition. The steering wheel leather is soft with no glaring flaws; the steering wheel trim was peeling, and has been subsequently replaced. The driver’s side door handle has similar peeling, but to a lesser degree. The instrument cluster, steering column stalks, switches, climate control, stereo, onboard computer, and center console are all functioning properly and in great shape. There are a few horizontal lines on the iDrive display screen, but no blown-out pixels. Both cup holders work. The extended leather of the center console is very nice. The seats are presentable but do have typical wear. The worst is on the driver’s seat bottom and back bolsters in the form of heavy creasing, slight discoloration, and frayed stitching. The rear seat has a failing stitch on the left rear passenger side seat bottom. The rear sunshade is stuck up, but we may rebuild this in the near future. The trunk carpet is lightly stained, and the factory toolbox is incomplete. The owners’ manuals are present, along with one key.
All maintenance is up to date and there are no common E9X/S65 issues. We replaced the rod bearings, engine mounts, oil pan gasket, a DCT transmission service, valve cover gaskets, timing cover gaskets, coil pack spark plug tubes, and spark plugs in preparation for sale. The S65 engine fires on command, idles smoothly, and pulls strongly to redline. It does not leak, drip, or spot. The VANOS units are quiet and the throttle body actuators function correctly. The DCT transmission shifts correctly in all modes with no slip. The EDC suspension also functions correctly in all modes, with no issues. The brakes have lots of pad life and rotor run-out remaining. There is no driveline or wheel bearing vibration or whine. We ensure it passes and pay for emissions in the State of Colorado.
