The Lexus IS-F was the first model in the Lexus F sub-brand—Lexus’s alternative to Mercedes-Benz AMG and BMW’s M Division. The IS-F was based on the second generation (XE20) Lexus IS, but with revisions significant enough to warrant its own internal designation (USE20). A bulged hood distinguishes the IS-F in addition to a lower ride height, unique side skirts, and quad exhaust tips. At its heart was the 416-horsepower 5-liter V8 2UR-GSE engine, featuring an 11.8 to 1 compression ratio, direct injection, and variable intake and exhaust cam timing. This was mated to an 8-speed Sport Direct Shift automatic transmission with paddle shifters. The suspension was extensively developed on Fuji Speedway and the Nurburgring. Six-piston Brembo brakes, and unique 19-inch forged BBS wheels rounded out the performance package. In 2011 the IS-F was further improved with revised suspension geometry, a limited-slip differential, and a tachometer-centric instrument cluster derived from the LFA supercar. The IS-F is the driving enthusiast’s alternative to the regular IS, offering a considerably more sporting experience paired with rock-solid Lexus reliability.
This Nebula Grey over Red leather 2012 Lexus IS-F came from a Glen Shelly regular after considerable searching early this year. Nebula Grey over a Black and Red leather interior trimmed in what Lexus describes as “aluminized” carbon fiber trim is a stunning color combination that sets this example apart from more pedestrian Lexus models. As a post-2011 model it features the improved suspension geometry, LFA-style instrument cluster, and the limited-slip differential. It is highly optioned with the Navigation / Mark Levinson Premium audio package featuring a 14-speaker 300 Watt surround sound system, intuitive park assist, and the preferred accessory package. Notable standard options include Smart Access with push-button start, bi-xenon headlights, and an interior bathed in fine leather and F-badges. The only modifications from stock are Swift lowering springs (the original springs are included) and an aftermarket front lip spoiler. It was originally delivered by Kuni Lexus of Portland in June of 2012 and sold as certified pre-owned car in 2015 to the second owner, who brought it to California. It changed hands one more time before we brought it to Colorado earlier this year. The first thing the previous owner did was having fresh Michelin Pilot Sport 4S tires mounted, followed by an extensive service at Stevinson Lexus. The work included an oil change, spark plugs, differential service, cabin air filter, engine air filter, and replacing the high pitch horn. Then in May of 2019 it was hit in the rear. The owner ensured that no expense was spared in the repair, holding the at-fault driver’s insurance accountable for a factory-grade repair going far beyond just the damaged rear end panels. The end result is a near-perfect IS-F. Receipts for the recent service and repair work are included in the records, and the Carfax shows regular dealer services prior to the previous owner’s tenure. This is an outlier example and one of the best iterations of Lexus’s first F car. We would like to find a new owner who will appreciate what it is and care for it for the next chapter of its story.
This IS-F presents exceptionally well inside and out—there is little to nitpick. There is no discernable evidence of repairs and the Nebula Grey paint is in excellent condition. Close examination reveals very minute imperfections, but they are few and far between. Overall it is in exemplary condition for its age and mileage. There is no rust and all VIN tags are in place with the exception of the trunk lid. All trim is present and in good condition; the carbon fiber Lexus emblem is a very nice touch. There is an aftermarket front lip spoiler that does have light scuffing. The windshield glass in good condition with no cracks and the side and rear windows are tinted. The headlight lenses are crystal clear with only some light pitting to be noted. The fog lights, marker lights, and taillight lenses are in excellent shape. The front doors project illuminated Lexus symbols on the ground when the door is opened. The IS-F specific wheels are in very good shape, with only light curb rash on the driver’s side front and rear wheels. They are wrapped in freshly mounted Michelin Pilot Super Sport tires with 90% tread remaining.
The interior is also in exceptional condition. There are no odors and it has never been smoked in. The carpets are clean, with no stains or tears. Carpeted IS-F floor mats and all-weather floor mats are included. The seat leather is very nice; it has no tears or failed stitching, and very minimal wear. All power seat functions work correctly and the side bolsters are thick and supportive. The 2+2-seating configuration provides impressive bolstering for even the rear seat occupants. The LFA-style instrument cluster and infotainment screen displays have no failed pixels. There are no warning lights and no system check messages. The Mark Levinson surround sound audio system sounds absolutely fantastic. The heat blows warm and the air conditioning blows ice cold even on 100-degree days. The blower fan is quiet and works at all speeds. All power door locks and windows work exactly as they should, along with the sunroof. The trunk is protected by the trunk mat, which has no wear or stains. The factory tool kit, factory jack, first aid kit, cargo net, and spare tire are all present. All owners’ manuals are present, along with two key FOBs—one of which is encased in a leather Lexus holder.
This is a turn-key IS-F. The most service mentioned in the summary paragraph was done at 61,000 miles and that was the last oil change. Beyond that the Carfax shows regular and frequent services done by Lexus dealers. No common Lexus XE20 or USE20 issues are present. The engine fires up on command, idles smoothly, and pulls strongly to redline. It sounds utterly fantastic above 4000 RPM. It does not spot or leak. The automatic transmission shifts smoothly and does not slip; the paddle shifters and shift knob gear change functions work correctly. The suspension is compliant and there are no abnormal clunks, rattles, or other abnormal drivetrain noises. The front wheels do rub on the tire liners at full lock due to the lowering springs (but this could be remedied by replacing them with the stock springs). The brakes are powerful with plenty of life left. We would like to find a new owner for it who will enjoy, care for it and appreciate it as it has been.
