If you are like me, you think that modern cars are too big, too heavy, and too complicated—all of which detract from the driving experience. BMW is one of the guiltiest offenders of this trend, but in 2008 it threw purists like myself a bone in the form of the 1 Series. Heralded as the spiritual successor of the iconic 2002, the 1 Series was smaller than its 3 Series sibling, but, because it was a BMW, it did not compromise on power, luxury, or a sporting driving experience. The 135is was the ultimate realization of the standard 1 Series cars, with many additional M-Sport components turning the 135is up to eleven. Face-lifted 2011 and later 135i’s came with the N55 twin-scroll turbocharged engine, a more reliable evolution of the twin turbocharged N54 engine. In addition to cosmetic upgrades, the 135is received 20 more horsepower than other 135i models and all of the M-sport suspension and cosmetic upgrades offered for the model. The virtually lag-free twin-scroll turbo power coupled with the lightning-fast shifting of the 7-speed M dual-clutch transmission (DCT) makes the 135iS a seriously fast car. Relatively limited production numbers and its replacement in the U.S. market by the 2 Series ensure that the 1 Series will be a future collectable.
This one-owner Lemans Blue over Black Leather 2013 BMW 135is came to us from an enthusiast who fit squarely into the optimistic demographic that believes the 135is will follow in the 1M’s collectible footsteps. The “is” package was the ultimate realization of the 135i, with all the upgrades from the M Sport package plus a 20 horsepower and 17 lb-ft of torque increase. The option list outlined above is extensive and accented by 135is-specific blue stitching in the seat leather. A Carbon Fiber rear diffuser and M Sport exhaust were added by the owner; and it was ordered with no iDrive. The 135is cars also received limited edition treatment including numbered prints and ongoing attention from BMW of North America that cemented their status as the little brothers of the instant-classic 1M.
This 135is was delivered new in North Texas and received dealer maintenance at Autobahn BMW in Fort Worth and subsequently Gebhardt BMW in Boulder when the original owner moved to Colorado. Its low miles and dealer service history reflect a weekend-driven car that was maintained above and beyond factory recommendations and includes a number of collector trinkets including serialized prints of a 135is drawing, a matching-spec car on a magazine cover, and the original window sticker and literature. The car presents very nicely and continues to surprise all of us with its immense low-end torque and telepathicly shifting M-DCT transmission. In preparation for sale, all that we found on our inspection was the need for tires, which we remedied with fresh non-run-flat Continental ExtremeContact DWS06 all-season tires. We would like to find a new owner who will enjoy this 135iS for the next chapter of its story.
The LeMans Blue exterior shines with original paint and panels. There are light rock chips present on the front bumper and leading edge of the hood, though the damage is superficial and indicative of a low-mileage weekend driver. There is one paint chip above the rear driver-side wheel well. The carbon fiber diffuser and M-Sport exhaust present very well and the de-badged trunk is very clean. There are light clear coat swirl marks and swirls around the rear bumper and trunk panel. Very light wear behind the front wheels is present on the lower rocker panels. The windshield presents minor pitting and no rock chips. The factory headlights are clean and clear with only minor pitting and the taillights are even cleaner. The Shadowline exterior trim is very clear and shows minimal signs of fade. The 135is exclusive Style-313 wheels are in great condition aside from one mark on the driver’s side front wheel lip and an even smaller curb mark on the passenger rear wheel lip. The Continental ExtremeContact DWS-6 tires are freshly-mounted with 100% tread remaining.
The Boston black leather and 135is-unique blue stitching present very well. The door panels have minor kick wear on the bottoms, while the upper door cards are very clean with minimal wear. The front seats are very clean with only minimal bolster wear and glossing on the driver’s side. This era of BMW leather was firm and taut enough to avoid much cracking, or patina, particularly in darker colors like Boston Black. The rear seats appear to have been used rarely, if ever, and present as such. The steering wheel is in great condition including the often-worn plastic spokes, which are clean and intact. The DCT shift paddles present very nicely. The Glacier Trim is also very nice. All power functions work and the dashboard is tidy with the iDrive delete option. The heat blows warm and the air conditioning blows cold. All records organized in a 3-ring binder, the factory window sticker, a clean Carfax, related magazine issues, a serialized 135is print from BMWNA, two keys, and all owners’ manuals.
All recalls have been complied with and it received a healthy recent inspection from Gebhardt BMW. The fluids have always been changed more frequently than dealer service intervals and no common 1 Series or N55 issues are present. There are no codes, no warning lights, no oil leaks, no wastegate rattle, no high or low-pressure fuel delivery issues, and no evidence of carbon build up. The N55 starts on command pulls strongly to redline. The DCT gearbox shifts smoothly. The suspension, driveline, and brakes are as would be expected from a 26K mile car. We pay for and ensure it passes emissions in the State of Colorado. As it sits, this is a turn-key 135is Sport ready to be driven and enjoyed by its new owner. We would like to find a buyer who will enjoy, care for it, and appreciate it for years to come.
