The 335is satisfied a niche in the BMW 3 Series performance segment that began with the original E21 320is in the late-1970s. The E30 325iS, E36 325is and 328is, and the E46 330i Performance Package (ZHP) all followed, although the latter escalated the gap closer to the M3 than the previous “is’s”. The E92 335is continued this trend with a power escalation of 20 horsepower (320 hp vs. the standard 335’s 300 hp) and 37 lb-ft of torque (295 lb-ft vs. 332 lb-ft). An over-boost that allowed 370 lb-ft for up to 7 seconds further upped the ante. BMW upgraded the motor mounts and added an additional radiator to handle this safely. Other unique kit included a factory short shifter for manual transmission cars, along with the M Sport Suspension, M Aerodynamics Package, M Sport Steering wheel, Glacier Silver aluminum interior trim, Shadowline exterior trim, and Style 313 wheels. In many ways, the 335is was a better car on the street than the highly-strung E9X M3 thanks to the N54’s buttery-smooth freight train of torque, all of which was available by 2,500 RPM. Low production volumes and all of them being post-life-cycle-impulse E92s have swung in the 335is’s collectability favor as the automotive world has come to truly appreciate the E9X generation 3 Series.
This time-capsule E92 335is ups the ante even further thanks to being 1 of 22 6-speed manual transmission 335is’s optioned in Space Gray Metallic over Coral Red leather. It was the 7th to the last 335is, built on Monday of the last week of production. The original owner ordered it through CO’s BMW (now Loveland BMW) to spec as a “single hump,” i.e. no iDrive 335is. It is optioned with the Premium, Premium Sound, and Cold Weather Packages. The M Aerodynamics Package, M Sport suspension, M Sport steering wheel, and all of the other kit outlined above were included in the 335is standard kit. The owner added the only thing that BMW didn’t give the 335is, a Quaife limited-slip rear differential built from the original differential by VAC Motorsports. BMW M3 rear subframe bushings were fitted when the rear end was installed. Other modifications include a Cobb Access Port with a Stage 1+ Tune (roughly 350 horsepower) and Cobb upgraded intercooler for better efficiency in Colorado’s thin air. A set of Cobb downpipes that allows the Stage 2 map are available for extra if desired. They were fitted for a short time but removed for emissions compliance. The original owner was an engineer and mature enthusiast, fellow BMW club member, and E90 fanatic. It spent a brief stint in California with the second owner, before we exercised our right of first refusal and brought it back to Colorado. It has always been serviced at BMW of Loveland or SCR Performance with fastidious maintenance intervals. All receipts are included in the records binder, along with the 335is marketing literature. In preparation for sale, the owner had SCR Performance change the oil, flush the brake fluid, replace and code the battery, and mount fresh Continental ExtremeContact Sport tires with a four-wheel alignment. The Carfax is clean and it has never been an accident. The Carfax reports three owners, but the first two were the original owner buying out the lease. There isn’t much to fault cosmetically or mechanically. Close scrutiny reveals small imperfections in the 3M Clear Bra and an area of paint wear on the rear bumper. As it sits, this is one of the most pristine and low-mileage examples of one of the best 3 Series ever built. We would like to find a new owner who will continue its stewardship standard and enjoy it for the next chapter of its story.
