The E92 generation M3 (2008-2013 model years, the 2 designates a 2-door) marks the end of an era for the BMW M3. It was the last M3 that followed the high revving, high compression, naturally aspirated, individual throttle body recipe that started with the iconic E30 M3. If you are an M car fanatic of the old school, this is a big deal in the turbo-charged world of the present. The E92 M3 is the most highly evolved and potent example of that old-school recipe. Put another way, the E92 M3 is a fire breathing monster that shrieks to a redline North of 8,000 rpm while inhaling through no less than eight snarling throttle bodies and wailing through an exhaust unimpeded by turbochargers. It is the M3 with the volume turned up to eleven. And, because it’s an M3, it still offers wonderful daily drivability, comfort, luxury, and practicality. Car and Driver, Motor Trend, and Edmunds called the E92 M3 the finest, single best, and most complete car on the market. Even the sanctimonious Jeremy Clarkson said it was the best car and there is no point in thinking otherwise.
This 2013 Jet Black ZCP E92 M3 is a low-mileage, two-owner car that just showed up at the Glen Shelly hangar one day—we love it when that happens! The last year of E92 M3 production, it is an excellent time capsule example of an E92 M3 with just over 20,000 miles. It is well-optioned, notably outfitted with the ZCP Competition Package paired with the shockingly good DCT transmission that many critics believe is a better partner for the high-revving 4.0L V8 than the 6-speed manual. Originally sold by Crevier BMW in Santa Ana, California, it remained and was also serviced there for the first four years of its life while accumulating a mere 5,634 miles. From there it came to Colorado under its second owner, who had a Ceramic Pro coating installed and drove the car 14,000 miles over the ensuing four years as a sunny day weekend driver. Under his tenure it was serviced regularly at Gebhardt BMW and Autohaus in Boulder. We found little to gripe about cosmetically and mechanically; this is a turn-key example of an M3. We would like to find a home for it where it will be well cared for, appreciated and enjoyed.
The exterior of this M3 presents very well, with minimal evidence of wear expected of 20,000 fair-weather miles. All panels measure original paint depth and the Jet Black paint is rich and deep, especially after the recent paint correction. The front bumper is peppered with small rock chips which is expected for a Jet Black BMW. The front bumper is not drilled for a front license plate which is a great bonus on these cars. The right rear bumper has one paint chip near the inside-right parking sensor. The exterior is clear, clean, and shines with its recent detailing and ceramic coating. The carbon fiber roof shines with no oxidation and the windshield shows only light pitting and one half-moon compression chip outside the driver’s line of sight. The Dynamic Headlights are functional and show minor pitting, the taillights are brilliantly clear, and the exhaust pipes shine brightly. The ZCP wheels are extremely clean and sparkle in silver with one chip in the finish on each wheel but no deeper curb rash or clear coat issues. The Continental DWS06 Tires (245/35r19 front, 265/35r19 rear) appear to have good tread life remaining.
The interior is in equally strong condition, with minor wear commensurate with a fair-weather, 20,000-mile driver’s car. There are no odors, tears, scuffs, or stains. The steering wheel leather shows minor patina and a few scratches on the top panel. The interior is just worn in enough to invite the next driver to use the car as a fair-weather fun driver while offering potential time capsule status. It has never been smoked in. The carbon fiber pattern leather trim is perfect. The leather covered trim panels, metallic shifter, e-brake handle and boot, as well as the leather seats are soft and supple with minor wear on the driver’s side and even less wear on the passenger side. The rear seats appear to have been used sparingly, if ever. The carpets are in very good condition. All interior functions work correctly; the power heated seats, windows, door locks, seat belt extenders, heat, air conditioning, comfort access, etc. There are no failed pixels in the cluster or the infotainment or climate displays. There are no check lights, warning lights, or check control alerts. The BMW Individual stereo sounds amazing. Two key FOBs are included, along with the owners’ manual leather booklet.
All maintenance has been to the BMW factory intervals or better. There really isn’t much to gripe about. Oil changes have been done every 5,000 miles or annually. At 20,000 miles rod bearings are not a concern yet; we recommend preventative replacement by the 60K mile mark. The S65 engine starts on command, idles smoothly, and pulls strongly to redline (once the oil is warmed up, of course). The DCT transmission shifts smoothly and there are no codes. The suspension is excellent, and the brakes have plenty of life remaining. We ensure it passes and pay for emissions in the State of Colorado. As it sits, it is a turn-key M3 ready to be enjoyed by its new owner As it sits, it is a turn-key M3 ready to be enjoyed by its new owner.
