Hansel BMW originally delivered this X5 in Santa Rosa, California, in May of 2013. It remained in Santa Rosa under the first owner until last year, and always dealer served at Hansel BMW under their tenure. A good friend and Glen Shelly regular found it (after searching extensively for this combination of options) and brought it to Colorado last year. It came to us via trade for a Porsche 911 C4S. We found little flaws during our mechanical and cosmetic inspections, indicative of proper ownership by the previous owners, which the Carfax supports. As with any X5, proper maintenance is essential and should be planned for, but the later-generation N55 engines have proven to be much more reliable than their N54 predecessors. The Carfax also shows two incidences of damage to the front bumper cover, which has been refinished in the factory Alpine White. As it sits, this is an excellent example of an X5 with a unique build and options. It will make a great all-around Colorado X5, easily handling commuting, car-pooling, and summer and winter mountain duty, all with the driving dynamics and performance that only can be found in the BMW X5.
The Alpine White exterior of this X5 is pristine, with paint gauging between 4 and 5mils on all panels with no evidence of bodywork. The front bumper cover was likely repainted, based on the damage reports on the Carfax. There is protectant film on the leading edges for extra protection. Imperfections consist of light scratches, chips, and very light swirls, which are diminished by white color. All trim is present and accounted for, with no notable defects. There is no rust. All VIN and warning stickers are in place. The windshield glass is crack-free and has no noteworthy pitting. The side and rear glass is near perfect, and tinted to protect the interior. The headlights are functional and in pristine condition, as well as the taillights and marker lights. The X5M wheels do have visible curb rash, but are in good shape otherwise. They are wearing Michelin Pilot Super Sport front and Pilot Sport 4S rear tires, the latter being recently replaced in preparation for sale. The second set of VMR wheels and Blizzak tires are nearly perfect, with only a few thousand miles on the tires.
The Black Nevada Leather interior is consistently exemplary. There are no odors, no stains, or evidence of this X5 being used heavily. The headliner is well-kept, with no sag, tears, or stains. The door cards are very nice, with minimal wear. The steering wheel has a small indent in the leather on the upper portion, but is in fantastic condition otherwise. The dashboard is crack-free and shows no signs of damage or wear. All power switches for windows, sunroof, door locks, and the rear hatch are functional. Climate control blows hot and cold when commanded. The stereo sounds terrific; the volume knob does show some typical wear. The center console is immaculate, and everything works as it should. The driver seat has creasing on the bolsters from getting in and out, but it is minimal given the age and mileage. The passenger seat also shows creasing, but to a lesser degree. The rear seats have even lighter wear than the front seats, although there are a few dents on the seat bottom behind the driver seat. The third row seats are completely unworn. The rear hatch area is stain free, the powered door is functional, and the owners’ manuals are present.
This X5 has clearly been well-cared for and properly owned—the most essential element of any used BMW. The E70 generation X5 was more robust than the F85 and G05 generations that followed it, as BMW has shifted to a more disposable model. Its N55 engine uses a twin-scroll single turbo and has proven to be much less problematic than the twin-turbo N54 engine that preceded it—and much cheaper and easier to maintain than any V8-powered X5. Things to put on the horizon are the water pump, valve cover and gasket, oil stand gasket, VANOS seals and solenoids, and high-pressure fuel pump, but none of these issues are present or showing any signs of needing imminent attention. We have seen N55-powered cars go well into the mid-100K mileage before needing these typical services, which could not be said for the N54 powerplant. This N55 engine fires on command, idles smoothly, and pulls strongly to redline. It is properly fast and perfectly suited to Colorado’s high altitudes. The transmission shift smoothly and does not slip; the all-wheel drive system functions correctly. There are no driveline noises or vibrations. The self-leveling suspension functions correctly and, with the M Sport package, strikes a perfect balance between cornering and comfort. The brakes are strong, with plenty of life left. We pay for and ensure it passes emissions in the State of Colorado.
