Summary

This 2014 Mercedes Sprinter 2500 V6 turbo-diesel 144-inch high-roof passenger van is a properly sorted camper. It was originally sold in February 2014 in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, and remained there under two owners as a passenger van until a good friend purchased it in 2017 with 76K miles, who we are selling it for. He brought it to Montana and professionally built it into a camper with just the right amount of refinement and amenities—much more than the typical outdoor-focused Sprinter, but more efficient, lighter, and logical than most mass-market Sprinter campers. As a passenger van, it was already outfitted with insulation, windows, and the factory roof-mounted rear heat and air conditioning. The build started with more insulation and high-end cabinetry custom-built by Doug King Design (DAkingdesign.com). The layout features swiveling front driver and passenger seats, a rear-mounted captain chair (with seat belts), overhead cabinets, pantries, storage, an elevated bed with full-length upper storage shelves, and multiple lower cabinets.

The mattress is ten inches thick and is sized between a queen and a king. It features a divider curtain between the kitchen/dining area and elevated shelves with storage and a garage area below. The kitchen features a Dometic sink/2-burner cooktop combo powered by an electric water pump and propane, with a direct drain (no gray water to deal with using environmentally safe, non-toxic dish soap). The refrigerator is a high-efficiency Indel B unit with a 5.2 amp draw (easily powered when off-grid by the solar/ship battery electrical system). There are multiple pantry and cookware cabinets, along with a slide-out table/cutting board and a flip-up exterior table. There is also a removable/stowable table main table for eating or using as a desk.

The garage, located under the bed, includes storage cabinets and water, propane, and power systems. Power comes from a 172-watt roof-mounted solar that is managed with a Midnight Solar charge controller and a Midnight Kid current monitor. This charges two deep-cycle ship batteries connected through an ACR relay, which allows them to be charged from the alternator, connect to the main battery if needed for vehicle starting, or be run completely independently. All buses are fail-sale and fuse-protected, including the water pump for the sink. High-efficiency LED lighting is routed throughout the interior and inside of some of the cabinets, along with USB ports in the bedroom. There is also a 2300-watt inverter capable of powering two laptops, or 110-volt accessories (coffee grinder, hair driver, etc). The beauty of this system is that it is completely passive, simple, and safe (no lithium-ion batteries that need to be maintained when not in use or danger of thermal runaway). It has been used for three-week stints off the grid, without ever going below 80% charge.

Climate control comes from the Mercedes factory rear heat and air conditioning system and an Espar Diesel heater under the passenger seat that is thermostat-controlled and altitude compensated. The heater receives fuel through the Mercedes fuel tap and burns approximately 1 gallon every 24 hours. A carbon monoxide detector is installed in the living area as an extra precaution. The 5-gallon propane for the stove is located in the garage, with a triple-screen vent for safety. It can be easily swapped at any grocery store without requiring RV-specific propane filling. There is also a propane detector in the living area for additional safety. The 25-gallon water tank is also located in the garage and includes a slosh valve for easy draining and filling.

The exterior features a ladder to access the roof, triple Rhino Rack aerodynamic cross bars, a rear trailer-hitch-mounted bike carrier, a front off-road bumper, and Toyo Open Country off-road tires. The Carfax reports thorough maintenance by the previous owners, and the current owner has detailed maintenance records under his tenure. In addition, the DEF service has just been done by Mercedes, and all maintenance is up to date. Cosmetically, the van presents like one of half the age and miles, with only minor cosmetic flaws.

As it sits, this is the perfect off-grid adventure vehicle. With off-road tires, it will go virtually anywhere a 4x4 Mercedes Sprinter will, with less weight and less complexity. It is distinctly nicer than many typical outdoor-style ramshackle builds but with a highly thought-out, engineered, and unique approach. At the same time, it is a fraction of the price of a newer mass-market Sprinter camper, with a more efficient and logical interior layout. We want to find a new owner who will write the next chapters in this Sprinter’s book of adventures and enjoy it for years to come.
