“A class of one.” That’s how Car and Driver summed up the BMW i8, a car that is so unique that it defines its own class. The i8 was one of the most heavily developed models in BMW history, starting with BMW Vision EfficientDynamics in 2009 and evolving into the i8 Concept and i8 Prototype over the next four years. It was a revolutionary and striking design featuring an aerodynamic futuristic body over a rigid lightweight aluminum and carbon fiber chassis. Power came from a 1.5-liter three-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine and two elector motors good for a total of 357 horsepower and 420 pound-feet of torque. When it was released in 2014 the production car was nearly identical to the prototype—a remarkable departure from the typical convention of releasing a captivating prototype only to be followed by a neutered production model. With super car appeal, M3 performance, and a design that stands out from the myriad of soulless Tesla’s and their boastful owners, the i8 is a proper BMW that truly does define a class of its own.
This 2015 BMW i8 is finished in Crystal White Pearl Metallic with a Giga Amido full perforated black leather interior. The accent color is BMW i Frozen Blue with BMW LED design illumination. With only 17,600 miles it is in excellent condition. Beyond the futuristic design and swing-wing doors, the i8 options were impressive; many have barely trickled down into modern cars almost a decade after its initial design. At its heart is the 357-horsepower power plant. The 1.5-liter turbocharged 3-cylinder engine makes 228 of those horses—that’s nearly E36 M3 power from a displacement smaller than a 6-pack! The electric motors did the rest and contributed to the combined 420 lb-ft of torque. Contort yourself inside over the raw exposed carbon fiber of the passenger cell “life module” and the interior is recognizable to any BMW-phile, but contradictorily unique to the i8. The high-resolution primary instrument display changes color depending on the drive mode. Another 8.8-inch iDrive display, full color heads-up display, and a lengthy list of standard kit round out the features listed above.
This i8 was originally allotted to Basely BMW in South Bend, Indiana, which was then sold by Audi Hoffman Estates to the first owner, who brough it to Colorado. He sold it to a Glen Shelly regular after we sold his E31 850i in 2018. Now we are offering it on consignment as he has taken delivery of a i8 Roadster. In preparation for sale, we had the windshield replaced, along with an inspection done at (CO’s) BMW of Loveland. The inspection noted that an oil change, cabin air filter, and spark plugs are on the horizon, along with a piece of trim on the passenger side door that could be replaced if desired but is functional otherwise. On our inspection we couldn’t find much to gripe about other than very slight wear on the driver’s seat and a hairline crack in the right rear taillight lens. The tires have DOT dates of 2019 and 2020 with excellent tread remaining. As sits, this is a fantastic example of an i8 that is at an attainable price, but still presents very close to the day it was released. Most electric cars, most notably Tesla, suffer from poor build quality and have been engineered to remove, not involve the driver from the equation. BMW did the opposite with the i8, paying tribute to its roots and solidifying a space in the BMW timeline that will only continue to be appreciated as it ages.
