Against a backdrop of luxury sedans that have model-crept to obese proportions and a dilution of the brand by a crossover in every shape and size, the BMW M235i is proof that BMW does still build a few driver’s cars. Unlike past M-badged cars, the M235i has remarkable performance to show for wearing the thirteenth letter of the alphabet. It is only slightly slower than its M2 and M2C siblings and has exclusive options in the form of M adaptive suspension, M sport brakes, Style 436M wheels, and the M aerodynamics package. The M235i is the BMW that does it all. It will meet and exceed your performance driving enthusiast needs, soak up rush hour traffic with grace, and thrive when the weather turns rotten. It offers 80% of the performance or better of the M2 at half of the price—and you can get it a manual transmission, unlike the M240Xi. It’s one of the few new BMWs that I would own myself, which is why we have one in the hangar.
This 2015 Alpine White M235i has just 27,500 miles. It was originally delivered by Peter Pan BMW the San Francisco Bay Area in 2014, and was subsequently sold as a BMW Certified Pre-Owned vehicle. It remained in the Bay Area until 2016 before coming to Colorado via Washington State. We got it from the fourth owner (an American muscle enthusiast) who was reluctantly selling it for a Corvette he just couldn’t turn down. It retailed for over $50,000, yet has already taken the initial big depreciation hit, making it one of the best buys on the market. In addition to the standard M235i kit, it is extremely well optioned with the Brushed Aluminum Trim, Premium Package (heated steering wheel, iDrive 5.0 w/ Nav, real-time traffic info, and more), Harmon Kardon Surround Sound, Adaptive Xenon Headlights, Comfort Access, and Style 436M wheels wearing non-run flat Michelin Pilot Super Sport rubber. It has an M2 quad-tip exhaust along with removable gloss black-vinyl on the roof and rear spoiler that echoes the original M235i Performance Line trim. That list does not include the best option of all: the 6-speed manual transmission. New cars optioned from the BMW with manual transmissions are few and far between—the M235i is the end of an era. Best of all, it doesn’t have the annoying automatic rev-matching that the later M240i came with. With the M235i you can still row your own gears without any interference from computers. Both FOBs are included, along with the factory floor mats, BMW cargo net, and all owners’ manuals. Its condition is excellent, the only gripes worth noting are a few chips in the front bumper cover, light pitting of the headlights, and the tires have 40% tread remaining. The roof and rear spoiler vinyl is removable if desired and the rear valance is trimmed around the M2 exhaust. We would like to find a new enthusiast who will appreciate and enjoy it for the next chapter.
