The BMW M2 was the olive branch that BMW offered to enthusiasts who felt that M cars had become too big, too heavy, and too disconnected. Oh what an olive branch is was! The M2 restored our faith with plentiful power, supreme handling, excellent manners, impeccable communication, and retina-separating brakes in a just-the-right-size package. An aggressively flared exterior and well-appointed interior completed the package of what BMW declared the spiritual successor of the iconic 2002tii. Journalists (including this one) were skeptical of that claim, as the E46 M3 was the most relevant comparison—which is not a bad thing. Nonetheless, the M2 was proof that BMW could still build a proper M car, despite the lack of an S preceding its motor designation. The M-DCT transmission machine gun fires shifts so rapidly and so intuitively that even staunch three-pedal curmudgeons (like myself) will relinquish their cold dead grasp on the traditional gearbox, but you can still get a third pedal if desired. Yes, the M2 really is that good. If you haven’t driven one, you should—but be careful because you might just drive it home. It’s one of the few new BMWs that I would own myself, which is why we have one in the hangar.
This 2016 Black Sapphire Metallic M2 with 31,400 miles came to us from our friends at a local Jaguar / Land Rover dealer, who took it in on trade. It was originally delivered by Sandia BMW in September 2016 and sold again there as a Certified Pre-Owned BMW in December of that year. That owner registered it in Tennessee, but the records show it largely remaining in New Mexico and Colorado, being serviced at Sandia and Schomp BMW. The records also show a proper break-in service including the engine and differential oils followed by regular dealer services and additional oil changes inside of BMW’s recommended interval. In preparation for sale, I had a oil service and brake fluid flush performed by Winslow BMW, along with a pre-purchase inspection. It is opted the old-school way with a 6-speed manual transmission—a rarity in the modern BMW world. Shod in Black Sapphire Metallic over Black Dakota leather it looks downright sinister. Black shows subtleties of the M2’s form that the other colors wash out. The exterior and interior cosmetic condition is excellent, with the only notable defect being minor swirls and scratches and some rock chipping on the lower fender flares. We have mitigated this with a round of paint correction and chip-repair underneath a fresh layer of protect film. This M2 is the perfect example to use and enjoy—it has just enough miles and imperfections to use without guilt, but still presents fantastically, turning heads everytime we drive it. As such, I have sourced a set of Apex Arc-8 wheels with Continental Extreme Contact DWS tires, and mounted Bridgestone Blizzak winter tires on the factory wheels so you can enjoy it year round! It comes who two key FOBs, all owners’ manuals, the factory floor mats, a clean Carfax, and all records organized in a 3-ring binder.
