The BMW M2 was the olive branch that BMW offered to enthusiasts who felt that M cars had become too big, too heavy, and too disconnected. Oh what an olive branch is was! The M2 restored our faith with plentiful power, supreme handling, excellent manners, impeccable communication, and retina-separating brakes in a just-the-right-size package. An aggressively flared exterior and well-appointed interior completed the package of what BMW declared the spiritual successor of the iconic 2002tii. Journalists (including this one) were skeptical of that claim, as the E46 M3 was the most relevant comparison—which is not a bad thing. Nonetheless, the M2 was proof that BMW could still build a proper M car, despite the lack of an S preceding its motor designation. Yes, the M2 really is that good. If you haven’t driven one, you should—but be careful because you might just drive it home. It’s one of the few new BMWs that I would own myself, which is why we have one in the hangar.
This 2017 Black Sapphire Metallic M2 with 8,900 miles came to us from fellow enthusiast and BMW CCA member who traded it in on an E36 M3 track car. It was delivered by Schomp BMW in November 2016. It has lived in the greater Denver area since, and been serviced regularly at the dealer. It is optioned the way we like it here at Glen Shelly: the old school way with a 6-speed manual transmission—a rarity in the modern BMW world. It also has the Executive Package, which includes the heated steering wheel, automatic high beams, rear-view camera, and a WiFi hotspot among other things. Shod in Black Sapphire Metallic over Black Dakota leather, it looks downright sinister. Black shows subtleties of the M2’s form that the other colors wash out. The exterior and interior cosmetic condition are excellent, with the only notable defect being some pitting from Colorado roads and light track use (the owner has done several BMW Club drivings schools and autocrosses). It has clear bra on leading edges of the front clip. This M2 is a prime example—it has already taken the “off the lot” depreciation hit, but the miles are so low that it still looks, smells, and feels fresh. It comes who two key FOBs, all owners’ manuals, the factory floor mats, a clean Carfax, and we pay for emissions. Performance driving instruction is available.
