We are old-school BMW guys at Glen Shelly, but when it comes to modern cars we shift just up the Autobahn from Munich to Ingolstaldt—home of Audi. Over the last few generations, Audi has outpaced its German rivals in virtually every category. One of the best Audi’s out there is the third-generation S3. The S3 packs a serious punch with just under 300 turbocharged, intercooled, direct injected horsepower mated to a 6-speed dual clutch gearbox. Add optional magnetorheological dampeners and it has the agility to match its power. A 2017 model-year-refresh added an updated grille, along with LED headlights and taillights. Inside a 12-inch Virtual Cockpit display is the centerpiece of a class-leading bespoke interior. The overall package that you get with the S3 is formidable, and even better when you consider its price point.

Summary

This 2018 Nano Gray over Black leather Audi S3 came to us from its original owner who traded it in for a Nardo Gray RS3 to match his Porsche 997 911. He is a knowledgeable and mature enthusiast who has owned and operated the S3 correctly. The S3 has all of the right options, including the Black Optic Package, S Sport Package, and Technology Package outlined above, along with the factory carbon fiber rear spoiler. It has been tastefully upgraded with an Integrated Engineering intake and turbo inlet pipe, an Integrated Engineering Stage 2 tune and transmission tune, as well as 034 Motorsport down pipe, Dynamic+ lowering springs and an 034 adjustable rear sway bar to round out the chassis. The modifications bring it close to overall RS3 performance, which we verified testing both cars back to back. Integrated Engineering and 034 Motorsport are both proven Audi vendors with solid reliability and excellent support. It comes with a binder of maintenance records dating to the original window sticker, showing regular services and receipts for all of the modifications. Outside of the dealer, all work was performed at Audi specialists Black Canyon Performance. During the owner’s tenure there were two incidents that required paintwork. The first was road debris hitting the front bumper cover. The second was a low-speed accident were another car turned into it grazing the front bumper cover, driver’s side headlight, and driver’s side front fender. Both are documented on the Carfax and with receipts in the records binder, with the work being completed by high-end restoration specialists Emmel’s Enamels. As it sits, this is an excellent example of a post-facelift third-generation Audi S3. It’s looks and performance rivals that of an RS3 for a fraction of the cost.

The exterior of this S3 is excellent, as would be expected of the mileage. The Nano Gray Metallic paint is understated, but perfectly highlights the S3’s angular design elements. The front end has been protected from Colorado’s rock chips by clear bra on the front bumper, mirror caps, and leading edges of the hood and fenders. The rear bumper is also protected. The bumper cover and driver’s side headlight have been replaced, and the driver’s side has been repainted as detailed in the summary paragraph. The damage was cosmetic, and the paint work is very good; it takes a keen eye to notice. The body panels are straight, with no notable dings, dents, or scuffs. The glass is in excellent condition; the windshield has minor pitting. All windows are tinted, including the windshield, which has clear UV tint on it. All trim is present and not UV-faded. The headlights are clear and free of pitting, having been protected by clear bra. The fog lights, turn signals, side markers, and taillights are all in excellent condition. The Bridgestone Blizzak LM-32’s winter tires are currently mounted; they have 30% tread remaining.

Interior

The Black Leather interior is likewise in excellent condition. The only imperfections we could find to note are a slight scratch in the leather on the steering wheel and minor outer bolster creasing on the driver’s seat. The sport seats are well-bolstered and supportive, while still being comfortable on long drives; the seat heaters work perfectly, as do all electronic seat adjustments. The Bang & Olufsen stereo sounds absolutely fantastic. The Audi virtual cockpit is a very nice upgrade from their analog-style displays. The infotainment system is intuitive and easy to use. The panoramic sunroof works beautifully. . The heat blows hot and the air-conditioning blows ice cold. A set of all-weather mats have protected the carpet, which is free of any stains or tears. All owners’ manuals are present, along with one key FOB. The second key FOB is used within the vehicle for the remote start function.

Mechanical

 engine photo

There are no mechanical issues present; the engine and transmission to not weep or leak. We had Black Canyon performance complete a pre-purchase inspection prior to our taking delivery of the S3, which is included in the maintenance records. It has been subject to excellent stewardship from the previous owner, with regular maintenance and oil changes. The engine starts on command, idles smoothly, and pulls very strongly to redline; it is perfectly matched to Audi’s 7-Speed S-Tronic gearbox, with its intuitive programming and lightning fast shifts. It is all made even better thanks to the intake, downpipe, Integrated Engineering Stage 2 ECU tune, and transmission tune. We daresay it is faster than our stock RS3 when driving both back to back! The handling has been upgraded with the 034 Dynamic+ lowering springs and adjustable rear sway bar; the result is more neutral performance in the corners and a slightly more aggressive stance, while still benefitting from Audi’s magnetic ride system. None of us would hesitate to take it cross-country or make it our daily driver.
