The F30-generation is the sixth generation of the BMW 3 Series, and with it, the F31 was the last BMW 3 Series wagon to reach the U.S. market. Powered initially by the turbo-charged N20 engine, and later the B46 engine, the F30 offered E36 M3 power with a highway fuel economy north of 30 mpg. Timing guide failures plagued early N20 engines, but these were rectified by the 2015 model year. The first life-cycle update occurred in 2016, which coincided with the B48 (B46 for the U.S. market) engines. The latter has proven to be a very reliable and robust power plant. In addition, the ZF 8-speed gearbox that accompanies it is the first automatic transmission that is truly better than the 6-speed manual—even for us diehards who like to row our own gears. Add larger interior volume, a lighter curb weight, better handling, and a host of modern options, and the F31 3 Series Sport Wagon is one of the best modern BMWs out there for a very reasonable price tag.
This 2018 Glacier Silver Metallic over Black Sensatec 330xi touring has 52,900 miles and is in excellent condition. Options consist of the standard Sport Line trim (sports tuning on the transmission, sport seats, sport steering wheel, matte chrome trim), along with heated seats and a heated steering wheel, active cruise control and blind spot detection, and parking distance control. It also has the Convenience Package, which consists of comfort access, lumbar support, and Sirius XM radio capability. It was originally delivered by Gebhardt BMW in Boulder, Colorado, and has remained here ever since. It was originally purchased by a Glen Shelly regular as a Gebhardt Certified Pre-Owned (CPO) demo vehicle and remained under that owner until he sold it to us. The Carfax reports two owners under his tenure, the second is when he paid off his lease.. The Carfax is clean and reflects a diligent service history from Gebhardt BMW and more recent Autosport Werks services. Two keys are included, along with the owners’ manual, a copy of the original window sticker, and the storage package kit in the subfloor of the trunk. As it sits, it is in prime condition to tackle the four-season Colorado sport-wagon mission. It is priced exactly at the Carfax value, with no BMW wagon premium.
The Glacier Silver Metallic exterior of this 330xi touring is excellent, with paint gauging between 6 to 8 mils on all panels and no evidence of bodywork. The leading edges are protected with clear film. The front bumper has some scuffs and pits, but none are severe or frequent enough to be noticeable. Imperfections consist of a scuff on the rear door sill on the driver-side and a slight blemish to the paint on the passenger-side quarter panel. All trim is present and accounted for; the most notable defect is UV fade on the black trim portions of the front and rear bumper covers. There is no rust. All VIN and warning stickers are in place and legible. The windshield glass is crack-free and has no significant pitting, though there is a tiny scuff on the windshield in front of the driver. The headlights are functional and have only a few minor scratches and pits. The taillights and marker lights are pristine. The wheels are in good shape, but do have moderate curb rash. They are wrapped in Continental Control Contact with 2022 DOT dates and 9/32nds of tread depth.
The Black Sensatec interior has been extremely well-kept. There are no odors, no stains, or evidence of this vehicle being abused. The headliner has no sag, tears, or stains. The door cards are very nice, with no wear. The steering wheel is in fantastic condition otherwise. The dashboard is crack-free and shows no signs of damage or wear. All power switches for windows, sunroof, door locks, and the rear hatch are functional. Climate control blows hot and cold when commanded. The heated seats and steering wheel function correctly. The stereo sounds terrific and is fully functional. The center console is very nice, and everything works as it should. The driver seat has almost none of the bolster creasing you would expect from this mileage, and all passenger seats are pristine. The rear hatch area is stain-free, and the powered rear hatch works well. Underneath the subfloor is the storage package kit that goes together easily.
The beauty of the F30 (F31) 3 Series is that they are relatively problem-free outside the early N20 timing-chain guide issues (for a BMW). The Carfax and maintenance records show oil changes at the factory intervals and regular services. At 59,300 miles, it isn’t too late to adopt a short-than-factory interval maintenance plan. The B46 engine starts on command and pulls wonderfully smoothly. There are no codes and The ZF 8-speed transmission shifts smoothly, almost telepathically. The suspension is firm yet compliant. The brake rotors have no lips, and the pads have over five mils thickness remaining. We ensure it passes and pay for emissions in the State of Colorado.
