If you are a wagon fanatic, the second decade of the twenty-first century has been a tragic one. Our beloved wagons have largely succumbed to the dominance of the cross-over, but we know that a sporty wagon is superior in every way to the bloated cross-over. The world’s insatiable desire for the inferior has marginalized our wagons. Yet, there are a few beacons of light that remain for us to keep the faith, and one of the brightest is the W213-generation Mercedes-Benz E-Class wagon. Mercedes-Benz optioned its long-roofs for some of its most affluent and loyal customers. The E400 Mercedes E Class wagon strikes the perfect balance for comfort, luxury, performance, and price. 4MATIC all-wheel drive allows four-season capability, and stowable 3-rd row rear seats allow nostalgic kid-hauling in one of the safest vehicles ever made. The bespoke interior has more opulence than a custom designer house and is nearly as large—because it is a wagon! Thank you, Mercedes-Benz for keeping the wagon faith…
This 2018 Mercedes-Benz Polar White over Designo Macchiato Beige/Saddle Brown Leather E400 4MATIC sport wagon is the ultimate mix of luxury and performance. The color combination is striking, with the flowing lines of the Designo Piano Black trim making it even more posh inside. This wagon was reportedly ordered to spec by the first owner, including the Piano black trim, but also notably with analog gauges in the instrument cluster—similar to Euro-spec E400s. The balance of the options comprises a formidable list, proof that Mercedes-Benz spec’d E-Class wagons for some of their most affluent customers. Highlights of the Premium 3 Package include the heads-up display, a host of safety and assist features that allow semi-autonomous driving with cruise control on, surround view, Burmester surround sound, Air Balance cabin purification and fragrance, and LED lighting. Other notable amenities are Active and massaging front seats, which are also heated and ventilated, the Acoustic, Warmth, and Night packages, and AMG line exterior trim and 18-inch 5-spoke wheels. The cavernous rear hatch compartment features stowable 3rd-row seating, which is protected by PRE-SAFE Plus rear-end collision and PRE-SAFE Impulse side-collision systems.
The original owner ordered it through Mercedes-Benz of Birmingham in Alabama in September of 2017, where it remained while receiving regular dealer maintenance until February of 2022, when it was offered for sale by Gebhardt BMW in Boulder, Colorado. Prior to the sale, it received an extensive service at Mercedes-Benz of Westminster. A fellow enthusiast, based in Cheyenne, Wyoming, purchased it and had it serviced at Mercedes-Benz of Loveland in Colorado under his tenure. We are selling it on consignment for him and are proud to have it at the hangar. In preparation for the sale, our Mercedes specialist couldn’t find much to gripe out. We replaced the driver’s door striker and did some light paint corrections to make it shine. The end result is one of the most unique and wonderfully optioned 4Matic Mercedes E400 sport wagons in the country. We would like to find another wagon fanatic who appreciates what it is and will use it for the next chapter of its story.
The Polar White exterior of this E-Class wagon is in great shape. The paint gauges between 4 -10 mils throughout. The only notable imperfections are several small dents in the hood, which take a little scrutiny to see due to the white background. There is a faint mark on the front of the driver-side fender and a small chip in the paint on the rear passenger door. The bottom of the front bumper cover has minimal scrapping but does have typical pitting. There is a small scuff where someone might have put their foot on the rear bumper cover just under the hatch. The car is rust-free. All VIN stickers and plates are present. All trim and black-work are present and pristine. The headlight glass has minimal pitting, and all exterior lighting is functional. All glass is in excellent shape. The AMG 5-spoke wheels are all free of curb rash or dents except for the passenger-side front, which only has a few scrapes. They are wrapped in Yokohama YK 740 GTX tires measuring 245/45 18” front and back with 2022 DOT dates. Tread depth is 10/32 in front and 11/32 in back.
The Designo Package Macchiato Beige/Saddle Brown Leather interior is well-kept and a joy to be in. There are no odors, and it has never been smoked in—and you can choose the aroma of your choice or none at all with the Air Balance system. The carpet is free of stains or rips. The headliner is pristine and the panoramic sunroof functions correctly. There is light wear to the driver-seat bolsters, very little wear on the passenger, and the back seats are virtually untouched. There is no seat twist, and all seat functions work, including the heating, cooling, active bolstering, and massage. The door cards have only a few faint marks. The dashboard is clear and crack-free. The steering wheel has some light wear on the upper portion. The infotainment system is pristine and functional. All power functions work as they should. The center console is in great shape, with all buttons, knobs, and switches present and looking great. Climate control blows hot or cold when required. The cargo area is clean and everything is present; the stowable seats underneath are pristine.
The mechanical condition of this E400 wagon is par with the cosmetic condition. The twin-turbo M276 is a very reliable powerplant, and the rest of the build oozes of quality. There are no codes or check engine lights and all services are up to date. The M276 starts on command, idles smoothly, and pulls strongly to redline. The transmission shifts smoothly, does not slip, and functions correctly in automatic and manual modes. The suspension is smooth and compliant, and adjusting and self-leveling functions operate correctly. There are no driveline vibrations and the brakes have plenty of life left. We ensure it passes and pay for emissions in the State of Colorado.
