Few cars have created as much controversy on their initial release as the fifth-generation Toyota Supra. But, after the shock of its aggressive styling and Toyota’s collaboration with BMW wore off, the enthusiast world has come around to recognize it as one of the best sports cars on the market. In fact, Car and Driver said, “Toyota’s tryst with BMW has produced its best driver’s car ever.” That’s a strong statement! The partnership was allegedly formed because Supra chief engineer, Tetsuya Tada, wanted an in-line six-cylinder engine to stay true to its roots. On paper, the BMW B58 engine is good for 335 horsepower and 365 pound-feet of torque, but real-world figures are considerably higher, which is supported by its 3.8 second 0-60 time. An eight-speed ZF transmission, limited-slip differential, and finely tuned suspension by Tada’s team make formidable use of that power and torque. Inside, the refinement and technology are more BMW than Toyota, and that is a good thing! Outside, several years since its initial release, its unique styling still gets attention and compliments on every drive.
This 2020 Toyota GR Supra is number 437 of 1500 Launch Editions. The Launch Edition came in three colors, Absolute Zero White, Nocturnal Black, and Renaissance Red. The Launch Edition added to the Premium Package with exclusive red mirror caps, red brake calipers, two-tone red and black interior, and numbered Launch Edition badge in carbon fiber. In addition to the heads-up display, this example also has the Driver Assist Package, consisting of the adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and parking sensors—essential items thanks to its stylish blind spots. The original allocation was sourced by AutoNation Toyota in Centennial, Colorado and delivered to the first owner in December of 2019. We purchased it from them in May of last year and have kept it in the Glen Shelly collection ever since. The first service was completed at 3,000 miles in April of 2020, followed by another service at 5,200 miles in May of 2021, shortly after we took delivery. We have driven it a few hundred miles since then, always giving it a premium spot in the hangar. If you look closely, you can see it lurking in photos behind the airplane of our other listings over the last year. As it sits, its condition is nearly identical to the day it was initially delivered, with virtually no notable flaws to point out. The dealer installed protection film when it was delivered and window tint shortly after that. The tires have plenty of tread remaining, the original owners’ manual booklet is present, as well as two key fobs. If history is a marker, the Launch Edition Supra should age very well and stands out as simply one of the best sports cars of the modern era.
